What a great post. Thank you for permission to give stuff away... The hardest for me is giving away things I received as gifts.

"Remember, don’t feel bad if it’s something someone gave you (and you do not like it). Give it away to someone who will like it. You are not giving away the person or the relationship. Just the stuff. Those people do not want you to keep things that you do not like (and most of the time they probably won’t even remember what they’ve given you or that it’s missing)"

This was most helpful!

Thank you!

My high school age daughter has been taking art classes since elementary school and has some beautiful pastels and paintings. I am running out of walls! A lot is stored. Most pieces are framed because we have entered them in our local fair. So that is my challenge. I've pared down some, and have spent this summer (while laid off) working on this. It's not the first time. But every time I learn more about myself, what I don't need, how "things" are a false security, and what a relief it is to drop things off at Goodwill. (or sometimes give away)

Thank you Tracy! The pet pictures are my favorite too. I was really pleased with how they turned out.

Yes, personal to me is anything that is beautiful and comforting to me. And thank you...we did not have a wall space to hang that picture and I wanted it near the coffee (since it is of a coffee shop sign here in Austin), so we just leaned it on the counter sort of temporarily at first, then we liked it so much we kept it.

This is very similar to the timeless words of William Morris, to the effect of "Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." "Personal" is really the same as "beautiful," unless you have a weird aesthetic?

I really love the photograph propped against the tile--I've never thought of doing that in a kitchen, and I have just the place and picture!

[...] See more about how Michelle does this in her home at Creating Peace. What are some ways that you do this in your home? I’m trying to think of more ideas to use functional or personal things as home decor, like hanging quilts or a pot rack in the kitchen. [...]

What a great way to think about the stuff in our house. I am kind of a knick-knack person (or used to be) but lately am feeling like it just looks cluttered and it bugs me. Hopefully when mom is here this next month I can do some serious clearing out of stuff!
