This Christmas my husband and I have really been talking about how we look at Christmas, what our priorities are and how we want to change things quite a bit.  This year we have really been workings towards minimalism.  It’s quite contagious.  Once you start getting rid of things and really taking a look at what you own and what you need, you just want to keep going and clearing things out.  We decided it was silly to add more “stuff” to our house just because.  We are not buying each other any gifts, instead we are hosting a Christmas party where we have asked guests to bring either an appetizer or bottle of wine if they so choose.  We want to open our home to old friends, new friends, neighbors and family.  We want to spend time with some people that we haven’t seen much all year and others we love catching up with regularly.  We want this time of year to be more about welcoming, engaging, serving, celebrating and less about feeling obligated to go out and buy things for people that you aren’t even sure they will like, need or ever use.

It just seems like society and consumerism have completely taken over Christmas and we must fight to get it back.

I love this article by Leo Balbouta of Zen Habits.  If nothing else, I hope it makes you think a little differently about all those presents on your “to buy” list.
