There will always be items in your home that you never use.  I promise.  You might think that some of those items will get used “someday”, but I’m here to tell you from experience that most of them will not ever be used again.  You just need to let go of them.  Wouldn’t it be better to give these type of items away so that someone else could be using them regularly?  There are many people in need of things these days, why not help them out (while helping yourself out in the meantime)?

Take a look around your house, go through each room and ask yourself these questions?

1.  Is there anything in this room I have not touched in 6 months to a year?
2.  Is there anything in this room that I do not even like?

Then put those items in your car and take them to Goodwill.  Someone will be glad you did. If there are any items that are worth something, you could always sell them on Craigslist.  We use Craigslist all the time and it’s great.  You earn cash for your unused items and other people get a great deal.  It’s a win win.

I keep a large plastic storage container in my garage for Goodwill items.  It is on the floor, next to the wall, right by my car.  I keep the lid off and I put items in there that I want to go to Goodwill.  Once it’s full (which I can easily see each day because it is right by my car) I put it into the back of my car and take it to the Goodwill that is just up the street.

You could even give yourself a little challenge and try to put at least one thing in the Goodwill bin each day for a certain amount of time.  A month, 3 months, etc.

The biggest part of my job as an organizer is helping people pair down their “stuff”.  Too much stuff is really the main issue when it comes to organizing.  Once you have less stuff, it’s much easier to keep it organized and in it’s place.  The goal is to only have those things that you love, reference often, or use daily in your house.  Everything else can go.
